The sacrum is connected to the coccyx by a sacrococcygeal joint (articulatio sacrococcygea), which is essentially an intervertebral disc.
This joint is strengthened by the following ligaments:
The lateral sacrococcygeal ligaments (ligamenta sacrococcygea lateralia) are paired, arise from the lower border of the lateral sacral crest and insert into the rudiment of the transverse process of the 1st coccygeal vertebra. They are similar to the intervertebral ligaments of the vertebral column.
The anterior sacrococcygeal ligament (ligamentum sacrococcygeum anterius) is located on the anterior surface of the sacrum-coccyx joint, is a continuation of the anterior longitudinal ligament.
The superficial posterior sacrococcygeal ligament (ligamentum sacrococcygeum posterius superficiale) starts from the edges of the sacral canal slit and attaches to the posterior surface of the coccyx, corresponds to the supracosteal ligament and ligamenta flava.
The deep posterior sacrococcygeal ligament (ligamentum sacrococcygeum posterius profundum) is located on the posterior surface of the bodies of the 1st coccygeal and the 5th sacral vertebrae, corresponds to the posterior longitudinal ligament.
The sacral and coccygeal corni are connected by sacrococcygeal syndesmosis (syndesmosis sacrococcygea).
