Anterior tibial vein

The anterior tibial veinAnatomical features of the anterior tibial vein, its tributaries and outflow areas
~ 3 min

In this note, we will consider the anatomy, areas of venous drainage and anastomoses of the anterior tibial vein.

The anterior tibial veins (vv. tibiales anteriores) are located on the anterior surface of the tibia.

They are usually represented by two large venous trunks communicated with each other by a multitude of small anastomoses. They flow into the popliteal vein (v. poplitea) and belong to the group of deep veins of the lower limb.

The anterior tibial veins are a continuation of the veins of the dorsum of the foot. Venous blood from the dorsal digital veins (vv. digitales dorsales)

Dorsal digital veins (vv. digitales dorsales)
Dorsal digital veins (vv. digitales dorsales)

flows into the dorsal venous arch of the foot (arcus venosus dorsalis pedis) from where it goes through the perforating vein to the anterior tibial veins.

Thus, the anterior tibial veins drain blood mainly from the dorsum of the foot.

Above the level of the foot, these veins have several tributaries. Generally, they are not included in a separate classification and do not have their own special name, but are considered as veins to the branches of the anterior tibial artery (a. tibialis anterior).

Tibial artery (a. tibialis anterior)
Tibial artery (a. tibialis anterior)

To understand the areas of venous drainage, let’s list these arteries:

  1. The posterior tibial recurrent artery (a. tibialis posterior recurrentis).

Posterior tibial recurrent artery (a. tibialis posterior recurrentis)
Posterior tibial recurrent artery (a. tibialis posterior recurrentis)

The vein for this artery drains venous blood from the are f the knee joint and the joint between the fibula and tibia

  2. The anterior tibial recurrent artery (a. tibialis anterior recurrentis). The vein for this artery carries venous blood from the patellar region

Anterior tibial recurrent artery (a. tibialis anterior recurrentis)
Anterior tibial recurrent artery (a. tibialis anterior recurrentis)
  3. The anterior medial malleolar artery (a. malleolaris anterior medialis). Venous tributaries drain blood from the medial malleolus area.

Anterior medial malleolar artery (a. malleolaris anterior medialis)
Anterior medial malleolar artery (a. malleolaris anterior medialis)
  4. The anterior lateral malleolar artery (a. malleolaris anterior lateralis). Venous tributaries drain blood from the lateral malleolus area.
