In this note, we will consider the anatomy, areas of venous drainage and anastomoses of the femoral vein (vena femoralis).

The veins of the lower limb form the system of the external iliac vein (v. iliaca communis);

into which the large femoral vein (vena femoralis) inserts in the femoral triangle area.

It communicates with the deep femoral vein (v. profunda femoris);

and at the level of the inguinal ligament forms a common femoral vein (v. femoralis communis), which accompanies the artery of the same name.

The great saphenous vein (v. saphena magna) may end by it.

The deep veins of the thigh drain blood from the small lateral and medial tributaries of the deep muscles, fascia of the thigh.
The femoral vein passes along the entire length of the thigh and has a number of direct and indirect tributaries that form its system.
The popliteal vein (v. poplitea).
Popliteal vein (v. poplitea) which collects blood from the popliteal fossa area. It ends by the femoral vein in the area around the knee joint
The small subcutaneous vein (v. saphena parva) and the great subcutaneous vein (vv. saphena madpa),
Small subcutaneous vein (v. saphena parva) which anastomose between each other. They end by the popliteal vein. Blood is drained mainly from the posteromedial region of the leg, as well as from the lateral and medial ankles
Anterior tibial veins (vv. tibiales anteriores) and posterior tibial veins (vv. tibiales posteriores) , which end by the popliteal vein
Anterior tibial veins (vv. tibiales anteriores) Posterior tibial veins (vv. tibiales posteriores) Peroneal veins (vv. peroneae), which end by the posterior tibial veins
Peroneal veins (vv. peroneae) The plantar venous arch (arcus venosus plantaris), into which in turn the plantar digital veins (vv. digitales plantares) pass, carries blood to them
The dorsal venous arch (arcus venosus dorsalis), which carries blood from the dorsum of the foot to the small and great saphenous veins, as well as to the anterior tibial veins
Dorsal venous arch (arcus venosus dorsalis) The dorsal digital veins (vv. digitales dorsales), which end by the dorsal venous arch and carry blood from the toes
