Fibula

Fibula: Anatomy & FunctionKey facts about the anatomy of the fibula, also known as the calf bone
~ 3 min

Let us examine the structure of the fibula. It is one of the leg bones and is positioned laterally

Fibula

It has three parts:

  • body (corpus fibulae/diaphysis)

  • proximal epiphysis (epiphysis proximalis)

    Proximal epiphysis (epiphysis proximalis)
    Proximal epiphysis (epiphysis proximalis)
  • distal epiphysis (epiphysis distalis)

    Distal epiphysis (epiphysis distalis)
    Distal epiphysis (epiphysis distalis)

Between the proximal epiphysis and the body lies the neck of the fibula (collum fibulae).

We also distinguish between three surfaces (they are best seen around the body of the bone):

  • posterior surface (facies posterior)

    Posterior surface (facies posterior)
    Posterior surface (facies posterior)
  • medial surface (facies medialis)

    Medial surface (facies medialis)

  • lateral surface (facies lateralis)

There are also three borders of the fibula (best seen in the area of the body of the bone):

  • anterior border (margo anterior)

    Anterior border (margo anterior)
    Anterior border (margo anterior)
  • posterior border (margo posterior)

    Posterior border (margo posterior)
    Posterior border (margo posterior)
  • interosseous border (margo interosseus)

Interosseous border (margo interosseus)

On the proximal epiphysis lies the head of the fibulae (caput fibulae).

The head has an apex (apex capitis fibulae)

and an articular facet (facies articularis capitis fibulae) that connects to the tibia.

There is a medial crest (crista medialis) on the body of the bone.

From the distal epiphysis, the lateral malleolus (malleolus lateralis) is derived.

It has an articular facet (facies articularis malleoli) connecting to the talus.

There is also the malleolar fossa (fossa malleoli lateralis) at the back of the ankle

Slightly in front lies the malleolar groove (sulcus malleolaris), in which the tendon of the fibularis longus muscle passes.
