Parietal bone

Parietal bone: Anatomy & FunctionKey facts about the anatomy of the parietal bone
~ 3 min

Let us examine the structure of the parietal bone (os parietale). It is one of the bones of the calvaria.

It has two surfaces:

  • external surface (facies externa)

  • internal surface (facies interna / cerebralis)

There are also four borders:

  • sagittal border (margo sagittalis)

    Sagittal border (margo sagittalis)
    Sagittal border (margo sagittalis)
  • frontal border (margo frontalis)

  • squamosal border (margo squamosus)

  • occipital border (margo occipitalis)

These borders correspond to the four following angles:

  • frontal angle (angulus frontalis)

  • sphenoidal angle (angulus sphenoidalis)

  • mastoid angle (angulus mastoideus)

We can distinguish the parietal tuber (tuber parietale) on the external surface of the bone.

    Underneath it are two lines:

  • superior temporal line (linea temporalis superior), with the temporal fascia attached to it

Superior temporal line (linea temporalis superior)
Superior temporal line (linea temporalis superior)
  • inferior temporal line (linea temporalis inferior), with the temporal muscle attached to it

Inferior temporal line (linea temporalis inferior)
Inferior temporal line (linea temporalis inferior)

On the cerebral surface of the bone, traces of the attachment of various cerebral and vascular structures are visible.

Along the superior border passes the groove for the superior sagittal sinus (sulcus sinus sagittalis superioris).

Along this groove, there are granular foveolae (foveolae granulares). These are traces of formations of the cranial arachnoid mater.

In the area of the mastoid angle lies the groove for the sigmoid sinus (sulcus sinus sigmoidei).

A large network of arterial grooves (sulci arteriosi), which are formed due to adjoining meningeal arteries, runs along the entire cerebral surface.

The impressions of the cerebral gyri (impressiones digitatae) can also be seen.

There is a parietal foramen (foramen parietale) at the sagittal border, through which the parietal emissary vein and a branch of the occipital artery pass.
