The patella, also known as a kneecap, is a sesamoid bone, that is, it is located in the thickness of the tendon of the quadriceps femoris and does not connect directly to other bones.

The patella is divided into two parts:
base (basis patellae)

apex (apex patellae)
Apex (apex patellae) We also distinguish two surfaces:
anterior surface (facies anterior)
Anterior surface (facies anterior) articular (posterior) surface (facies articularis), which is connected to the patellar surface of the femur.
